Maritime India Summit 2016 – Anchored for Growth
On 14 April 2016, at Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai, India; the first Maritime India Summit was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This summit is an initiative of Ministry of Shipping, Government of India which would be held from 14-16 April consisting of two days conference and three days exhibition.
This summit aims to be “Anchored for Growth” by providing a unique platform for participants to explore potential business opportunities in Indian Maritime Sector. The first time held summit showcases exciting investment opportunities in Ship building, Ship Repair, Ship Recycling, Port Modernization, New Port Development, Port-based Industrial Development, Port-based Smart Cities and Maritime Cluster Development, Hinterland Connectivity Projects and Multi-Modal Logistics Hubs, Green initiative in Port and so on. The summit hosted over 3,000 national and international delegates and 72 speakers who addressed thematic sessions including the topic of Union government’s Sagarmala project aims to develop India’s ports and coastline. The Sagarmala program will include more than 150 projects working on modernization of existing ports, establishment of new ports, freight friendly expressways, inland waterways, coastal Special Economic Zones etc.
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi said “Five new ports are planned to meet the increasing demand of the Exim trade, which will rise in proportion with the fast-growing Indian economy. New ports are also being developed by several coastal states of India,”
Added further he talked about the vision of Ambedkar on developing the scope of industrial investment and happily stated that we have embarked on the development of national waterways, following the foresight of Babasaheb.
